The hole left by the departure of Dr. David Sugarbaker from Boston’s Brigham & Women’s Hospital has been filled by Raphael Bueno, M.D. Dr. Bueno who has been with the International Mesothelioma Program since it opened its doors will take over as Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery.

Dr. Bueno is dedicated to finding new ways to diagnose and find new mesothelioma treatment. He is currently in charge of the Verastem clinical trial for mesothelioma. This is the clincial trial for sarcomatoid type mesothelioma with a goal to determine if this drug can improve survival of the disease.

Dr. Bueno is invested in his mesothelioma patients’ care and recovery from the beginning of their relationship. He is dedicated to the patients and the staff who continue to work with him to fight mesothelioma. His patients are at the center of his focus to fight this disease.

Dr. Bueno attended Harvard College, majoring in biochemistry. He then attended the Health Sciences and Technology program at Harvard Medical School, where he received his medical doctorate in 1985. That same year he began his graduate medical training as an intern in surgery at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, followed by a surgical residency.

Dr. Bueno joined the Brigham’s Thoracic Division in 1996. He is board certified in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.  Dr. Bueno’s clinical interests include tracheal surgery, lung cancer, mesothelioma surgery, esophageal cancer, benign esophageal disorders, thymomas, and minimally invasive surgery.

Dr. Bueno’s laboratory research objectives are to better characterize the behavior of mesothelioma.
