Paul Sugarbaker MD mesothelioma

Dr. Paul Sugarbaker MD, FACS, FRCS, a peritoneal mesothelioma specialist, has now retired as the Chief of the Peritoneal Surface Malignancy Program and the Director of the Center for Gastrointestinal Malignancies at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC.

His specialty was peritoneal surgery, also known as surgery of the abdomen. He was a pioneer in hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), a heated chemotherapy wash applied to the affected belly area during surgery. The purpose of the procedure is to destroy microscopic disease beyond what surgeons are able to remove. This approach has demonstrated longer survival rates in peritoneal mesothelioma patients. Dr. Sugarbaker graduated from the medical college at Cornell University and completed his residency at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, MA. He spent a decade at the National Cancer Institute before moving to the Washington Cancer Institute. Dr. Paul Sugarbaker is the older brother of the late Dr. David Sugarbaker, a renowned pleural mesothelioma surgeon.
