Joseph S. Friedberg, MD

Joseph S. Friedberg, MDA mesothelioma specialist, Dr. Friedberg was appointed as Division Head of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Maryland in September 2014. He was Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Co-Director of the Penn Mesothelioma and Pleural Disease Program, as well as an Associate Professor of Thoracic Surgery. He is one of the leaders in the search for new treatments for patients with lung cancer and pleural diseases, including mesothelioma.

Dr. Friedberg focuses his clinical research on developing more effective treatments for mesothelioma patients.  Dr Friedberg has pioneered the use of photodynamic therapy along with surgery to treat mesothelioma. Currently, he is involved in clinical trials that are investigating the use of lasers and photodynamic therapy.  Dr. Friedberg also has expertise in open and minimally invasive cancer surgeries.

Dr. Friedberg received his medical degree from Harvard University. He completed a residency in general surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, as well as a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Brigham & Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Friedberg was recognized as one of America’s Top Doctors by Castle Connolly from 2007-2013, and was recognized as one of America’s Top Doctors for Cancer in 2009. He has also authored or co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.

Dr. Friedberg is a member of numerous professional societies including the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American College of Surgeons, the Society for Thoracic Surgery, and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.
