Matthew J. Schuchert, MDDr. Matthew J. Schuchert is an assistant professor of surgery in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). His hospital affiliations include The Hillman Cancer Center and several other UPMC facilities as well as the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), where he serves as Chief of Thoracic Surgery.

Dr. Schuchert specializes in all aspects of thoracic surgical oncology. Thoracic surgery is one treatment option for patients with malignant mesothelioma. Dr. Schuchert’s research on the immunology of lung cancer, focusing on the development of new cancer therapies, also has implications for mesothelioma patients.

After completing an undergraduate degree at Yale University, Dr. Schuchert received a medical degree at John’s Hopkins University. He then went on to complete a residency in general surgery at UPMC and a fellowship in minimally invasive thoracic and foregut surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Dr. Schuchert is board-certified in general surgery and thoracic surgery as well as a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Society of University Surgeons, and the American College of Surgeons, among other surgical societies. He has guest reviewed for and been published in numerous medical journals.
